Council approves “modest” 3.6% rates increase, plans to start work on Town Hall

A rates increase of 3.6 per cent was announced last night by the Wellington City Council, after it adopted its Annual Plan. It’s a “modest” increase, says the council. Other decisions confirmed last night include establishing the controversial Urban Development Agency, which the council says will “rapidly increase” the supply of accordable housing, and (at last) starting work on strengthening the Town Hall.

The Town Hall news comes in the last sentence of the council’s press release, along with building the Movie Museum and Convention Centre which are defined as being “subject to council approval.” The Town Hall strengthening has already been approved by the council – twice. Read more »
