Two Auckland men arrested for assaulting and kidnapping Wellington taxi driver

Wellington Police have made two arrests following the kidnapping and assault of a taxi driver in the Ngauranga area yesterday morning.

A 23-year-old Auckland man was arrested in Titahi Bay today. Earlier, a 24-year-old man, also from Auckland, was also arrested in Titahi Bay.

The men are due to appear in Wellington District Court tomorrow morning, both charged with aggravated robbery, aggravated wounding, kidnapping and arson.

This was an appalling incident for the victim, who remains in hospital and is recovering from his injuries.

Wellington Police are appealing for sightings of a white van which is believed to be linked to the kidnapping and assault of a taxi driver on Wednesday morning. Police believe the vehicle, a white Toyota Probox registration FLY984, travelled from Auckland to Wellington on Sunday.

We want to hear from anyone who knows the whereabouts of this vehicle, or thinks they may have seen it since Sunday, and particularly want to talk to people who saw it in Wellington in the early hours of Wednesday.

Police have arrested two men in relation to this offending. It is believed a third offender is involved and Police are following strong lines of enquiry to locate that person.

Wellington Police are investigating the kidnapping and serious assault of a taxi driver in the Ngauranga area this morning.

Shortly after 2:30am the male taxi driver was parked on Jarden Mile waiting for work when he was assaulted and placed in the boot of his vehicle.

He was let free approximately two hours later in the suburb of Grenada Village, and notified Police.

He was taken to Wellington Hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

The taxi was recovered not far from where the driver was let free.

Police are working with him and have been making a number of enquiries including carrying out scene examinations and reviewing the camera footage from the taxi.

We need help to identify him. He likely holds the key to solving this crime.
