Burglars caught in the act in Raumati

News from NZ Police
Two burglars were caught in the act last night in Raumati South and will be appearing in court this morning.

At 3:15am this morning, Police received a call from a concerned neighbour who saw two people behaving suspiciously. The caller could see them loading goods from a neighbour’s house into the back of a 4 x 4.

The offenders were disturbed and fled while the 111 call was being made. The neighbour gave Police a detailed description of the 4 x 4. Wellington Police responded immediately and by 3:20am, the van was located near on Kapiti Road.

After pulling the driver over, a number of stolen goods, including valuable jewellery and coins, was found in their possession. A few minutes later, property thrown out of the window of the van was also located on the roadside.

Kapiti Police arrested the two offenders, two men aged 23 and 24.

Sergeant Nathan Smith says this was an excellent example of neighbours looking out for one another, helping to keep our communities safe.

“As a result of the neighbour’s detailed report, we were able to apprehend these offenders and prevent them from targeting another home. Due to the immediate report of suspicious behaviour, Police were able to respond straight away and recover all the stolen goods too. Thanks to the excellent response from both neighbours and staff, we can hold these offenders to account and prevent further harm to those in the community.”

Both men are due to appear in the Porirua District Court this morning facing burglary charges.
