Eight vehicles – truck, ute, cars, minivan and motorbike – in crash on SH1 at Wairakei

More than a dozen people were injured this afternoon in a crash involving eight vehicles on State Highway 1 at Wairakei.

The crash was between Palmer Mill Rd and Oruanui Rd at about 12.15pm.

A truck crashed into the back of a vehicle, which then shunted a number of other vehicles. One of those vehicles was pushed across the road into oncoming traffic.

The most severe injuries were to a motorcyclist.

Police said between 10 to 15 people were taken to hospitals in Tokoroa and Taupo, and to Waikato Hospital.

Tow trucks were removing damaged vehicles from the scene. Local diversions were in place and the road was closed. The Serious Crash Unit and the Commercial Vehicle Safety Team are investigating.

At approximately 1pm this afternoon, the Rotorua based BayTrust Rescue Helicopter, Taupo’s Greenlea Rescue Helicopter & the Waikato based Westpac Rescue Helicopter were all dispatched to a multiple motor vehicle accident north of Taupo.

There were several vehicles involved in the crash including a truck, motorbike, ute and mini van. There were multiple patients.

There was a large response from the emergency services, with some people trapped in the vehicles. State Highway 1 was closed as a result and all three rescue helicopters landed on the road at the crash scene.

The Rotorua based chopper flew 2 patients to Taupo hospital, then uplifted a 3rd patient with serious injuries and flew the 24 year old man from Palmerston North to Rotorua Hospital.

Both the Westpac rescue helicopter & the Greenlea rescue helicopter flew seriously injured patients to Waikato hospital.
