Rimutaka Hill Road closed again – first the gales, then a slip

The Rimutaka Hill Road was closed this afternoon by a large slip.

The road was closed for about three hours. It reopened about 3.45pm after the slip had been cleared. There was a considerable backlog of traffic.

This was the second closure in 24 hours – the road was closed last night because of high winds and gusts. The NZTA announced the closure about 8.45pm. The road was reopened at about 11pm, with a warning that strong winds and gusts were continuing.

Northwest gales were severe in Wellington this morning – gusting to 130km/h in exposed places at times. The high winds caused some trolley buses to be withdrawn from service.

And yesterday, Boulcott Street was closed by police when the wind loosened roofing on the Spark Central Building.
