Missing Taupo skier found dead in crater lake of Mt Ruapehu

A missing skier was this morning found dead in the crater lake on Mt Ruapehu.

The 39-year-old Taupo resident was reported missing last night, after he had left home the previous day to go skiing at the Whakapapa skifield.

Initial inquiries found his car in the skifield carpark.

Due to bad weather, no searches of the mountain were able to be conducted last night, but at first light this morning, ground teams and helicopters were used to search of the mountain.

Initial indications are that the man accidentally fell into the lake.

His family had joined the search and have been advised of his death.

“It is a tragedy for this man’s family. He was located at an area where many people go to get views of the lake,” said Senior Sergeant Grant Alabaster .

The death has been referred to the Coroner.
