Moderate quake just before midnight

A 4.8 magnitude earthquake was felt throughout Wellington at 11.28 last night.

It was centred in Cook Strait 30km west of the city, at a depth of 38km.

GeoNet categorised it as moderate.

It described the quake as causing “light shaking.”

More than 11,000 people – from Gore to Hamilton – contacted GeoNet to say they had felt the quake.

    As my bed (a heavy one) shook and rattled, would hardly describe as a “light shaking”!
