Body of missing diver found on beach after 2-day search

A body has tonight been found on the shoreline by a member of the public at Flat Point Beach in the Wairarapa. Searches have been conducted since a diver went missing in the area yesterday afternoon.

While formal identification is yet to be completed, the body is understood to be that of the missing diver.

His name will be released when all next-of-kin have been notified.

A helicopter today continued searching the shoreline in the immediate area of Flat Point in the Wairarapa, where a diver went missing on Sunday. A local commercial fisherman has given a generous amount of time and effort to help as well.

A large family presence has been conducting shoreline searches.

Police and LandSAR volunteers will continue shoreline searches from late tomorrow morning.

It is hoped that weather conditions in the next few days will enable the Police National Dive Squad to begin a search underwater.

The search for the missing diver at Flat Point in the Wairarapa has resumed this morning. A helicopter began searching the coast at 6.30am. A local fishing boat is assisting as well as the Navy vessel HMNZS Otago together with her rigid hulled inflatable boat.

The area is remote and a southerly is forecast.

News from NZ Police – December 17
The diver missing at Flat Point Beach in the Wairarapa has not been found. He was one of a party of three divers. Police were notified at 12.58pm of one of the men getting into difficulty. Two of the party made it to the shore, but the third man did not.

The Westpac rescue helicopter and another chopper searched for several hours along with some local fishing vessels.

The naval vessel HMNZS Otago provided assistance searching the offshore portions of the search area and some of her personnel came ashore to help.

The Wellington Police Maritime Unit’s launch Lady Elizabeth IV travelled part way to the scene but the weather deteriorated and she was forced to turn back.

Searching continued till dark and will resume early tomorrow morning.

A diver has been reported missing at Flat Point Beach in the Wairarapa.

He was one of a party of three.

Police were notified at 12.58pm.

A local helicopter is being used to search the area.

The Wellington Police Maritime Unit – Lady Elizabeth – has been sent to the area.

A navy ship is also nearby and is poised to assist.
