Man arrested after woman twice assaulted and robbed in her home

A 38-year-old man has been arrested in relation to two robberies at a Church Street house in Palmerston North.

The man is facing a number of charges in relation to the two incidents, which occurred on 14 October and 5 January.

The charges include burglary, aggravated robbery, indecent assault and threatening to kill.

He is scheduled to appear in Rotorua District Court today.

We know that these two incidents were extremely concerning for the community, and we thank all those who provided information and assistance to the investigation team.

The victim has been advised of the arrest. Police continue to provide support to her and her family as she recovers.

A 71-year-old woman was seriously assaulted in her Palmerston North home on Friday morning, and had her eftpos card and vehicle taken. She had been the victim of a similar burglary in October.

Palmerston North Police investigating the burglary are seeking sightings of a stolen red hatchback car.

The woman is now safe and is being supported by her family and Victim Support.

A forensic examination is continuing at the house today.

Detective Inspector Marc Hercock says Palmerston North Police are focused on holding the person responsible for this to account.

“This was a traumatising attack and we have a dedicated team working tirelessly to resolve the matter. Public sightings of the car are critical to the investigation.”

Police would like to hear from anyone who has seen a red Toyota Corolla registration plate EWG803 being driven around or parked in the wider Manawatu area.
