Gap is growing between Wellington’s homes and population

Wellington’s population growth is currently twice as high as dwelling growth.

Wellington City’s resident population has been growing at about 2% a year in 2015-17, compared with about 1% annual growth in the housing stock (based on building consents and previous census counts of private dwellings).

In earlier years the gap between population and housing growth was less pronounced, and in the late 1990s the housing stock was increasing at a rate higher than the population growth rate.
