SH1 back to two lanes between Paekakariki and Pukerua Bay

State Highway One between Paekakariki and Pukerua Bay was reopened in both directions early this morning, after repairs to storm damage which caused yesterday’s long delays.

There is a 50km/h speed restriction in place for northbound traffic.

Work continues tonight to complete repairs on the storm-damaged coastal highway.

NZTA is advising drivers to take extra care travelling through this area.

On SH2 at the Petone interchange, a crash caused delays from 6.30am. NZTA reported that the backlog of traffic was “easing slowly” at 9am.

Well done NZTA! Puts the Regional Council’s Wairarapa rail performance to shame!

The location of the damage was really fortunate. They simply “borrowed” a couple of hundred tonnes of large rocks and a truck and loader from the Transmission Gully development round the corner. They have been barging them from Takaka and stockpiling the rock for the project since the middle of last year

In comparison, it took six days to fix Petone to Ngauranga in 2013.
