Show on the beach will celebrate Wellington’s weather

Press Release – Almighty Roar Productions
Holly Gooch of theatre production team Almighty Roar had to look hard to find actors who could withstand tough conditions when looking for a cast for her Fringe Festival show. ‘I needed actors who would agree to perform in all weathers,’ says Gooch.

Ralph Johnson, Amelia Cartwright, Shivneel Singh and Lisa Lawrence were brave enough to take on the challenge. Their play The Wellington Weather Lover’s Playlist will be staged on Freyberg Beach spit in March, and will be going ahead in any conditions.

The piece is a celebration of the way in which Wellingtonians thrive on the wild Wellington weather. ‘It showcases the way the weather has made us the positive, adventure-loving, tenacious people we are,’ Gooch explains, ‘so there’s no option to back out if the weather’s not favourable!’.

Almighty Roar believe the short play will attract a wide audience, including people that wouldn’t normally go to a Fringe show. ‘It will appeal to anyone who knows what it means to be a Wellingtonian, and for those who are visitors, perhaps Wellington will make more sense after they see the play’.

Gooch is the first to acknowledge that Wellington has been failing to live up to its reputation for wild weather recently, with some of the sunniest weather on record this summer. ‘It’s ironic,’ she says. But argues that getting out and seeing some live local theatre is a great use of a sunny day if the weather holds until March. But admits that with the recent cyclone rain, anything could happen.

For months Gooch has been proving that there is always something great to do in Wellington, regardless of the forecast, by posting daily activity ideas on The Wellington Weather Lover’s Playlist Facebook page. As the show gets closer she is also releasing details about the twelve songs that feature in the show. The page also invites Wellingtonians to share their own weather stories as well.

The Wellington Weather Lover’s Playlist will be performed at Freyberg Beach spit on Thursday 8th March 6pm, Friday 9th March 6pm, Saturday 10th March 2pm and 4pm and Sunday 11th March 2pm and 4pm. Koha entry. Tickets at fringe.co.nz or at the door.
