Former Collegiate music teacher jailed for sex crimes

News from RNZ
A former Wanganui Collegiate music teacher found guilty of historical sex crimes has been jailed for six years.

Trevor Ian Gibbs was convicted on five charges of doing an indecent act on a boy and one of sodomy, after a week-long trial in December.

Judge Richard McIlraith said the 72-year-old had taken advantage of his position as a music teacher and sexually offended against one of his pupils who was away from home and vulnerable.

The judge said Gibbs groomed the student and manipulated him over years.

The victim, who was in court, said the offending had changed his life to one of fear and shame and that he had to learn how to trust people again.

Gibbs has previous convictions for sexual offending against boys.
