More bus-priority lanes and bus shelters in ten-year plan

The Wellington City Council has earmarked $34 million in its draft ten-year plan to help improve Wellington bus services, with bus-priority lanes and new shelters.

Councillor Sarah Free, the public transport portfolio holder, says Wellington’s population is expected to grow by up-to 80,000 people in the next 25 years so it’s important the city has an efficient and user friendly public transport system.

“A reliable and affordable bus service is vitally important if we don’t want to end up with gridlock as the city grows,” she says.

“While the regional council is responsible for bus routes and timetables, the Wellington City Council can help ensure the service is more reliable by putting in more bus-lanes and bus-only lanes and by giving buses priority at controlled intersections.

“This project will reduce pressure on private transport and help make bus travel times quicker and more reliable. This’ll help more people, whether using public or private transport, to commute more quickly and comfortably.

“We’re also going to roll out 70-80 new bus shelters over the next decade to help ensure public transport is not only affordable and efficient, but a comfortable option for Wellington residents,” she says.

The proposed changes will be done in coordination with Let’s Get Wellington Moving and the development of Wellington’s cycleways.

Potential bus-priority lanes have been identified for the Golden Mile (between the Railway Station and Cambridge Terrace), Victoria Street, Willis Street, Taranaki Street, Kent and Cambridge Terraces, and Adelaide Road and Karori. Other proposed projects include improvements to promote the effectiveness of the Wellington bus interchanges in Kilbirnie, Miramar, Karori, Johnsonville, Brooklyn, Newtown and Island Bay.

Funding for the bus-priority project and the new bus shelters are part of the Council’s draft 10-Year Plan.

Cr Free says it’s important the Council hears what the community thinks of the plan.

“Whether it’s to ask for more bus shelters, other improvements to bus stops, or whatever else anyone wants to raise regarding our city’s future, we want to hear what Wellington residents think.”

    An easy way to fix some of the congestion would be to turn some onstreet parking into peak time clearways and even better still, buslanes so public transport users can bypass the congestion.

    Another 70-80 shelters over 10 years is far from enough, especially given Wellington’s weather. We have hundreds of stops in the city, so if we really want more people to commute by bus we need to get serious about keeping them out of the elements while waiting to do so! Why not make it a goal to have a shelter of an acceptable standard at EVERY stop 10 years from now?

    How is the WCC going to allocate these bus stops? The regional council appears to have surveyed all the bus stops in the region and allocated a ranking to determine the need for a shelter. Is the WCC going to reinvent the wheel and develop its own rankings, or is it giving the regional council a free pass by funding things that the regional council themselves have admitted they should be doing?

    Well said greenwelly. Bus stops are GWRC’s domain (otherwise they will have even less to do) but GWRC does need a resource consent from the WCC for new bus shelters, which keeps two teams of bureaucrats employed. Of course, not everyone wants a bus stop outside their front door so having a consent process has merit. So I wonder where WCC plans to put its 70-80 new shelters and whether GWRC has been informed about the locations? I wonder who is paying since the bill, at probably $120,000 each, will total $9 million.

    Luke, WCC already has peak hour limits for car parking on arterials and main CBD streets. Harbour City & Tow does very nicely indeed catching errant parkers.

    I welcome the news that there will be more shelters at bus stops! There is one proviso: the shelters must be of WCC or GWRC design, thus devoid of adverting hoardings NOT the structures built by Adshel. They do not provide shelter, plus the advertising hoardings on them are an assault on the city-scape, and the Adshels are often placed so that the hoardings block the view of the Real-Time Information panels which waiting passengers should not have to get up from the seats to see when their bus is coming.

    I am a keen supporter of the creation of more bus lanes. They are of considerable benefit to bus users, and bus drivers. In addition, let’s have our Golden Mile free of all parked and moving vehicles, except buses, during the morning and evening peaks.

    GWRC, any chance you can add the actual time to the real time info panels? Surely not that hard?

    Andrew great idea to give the actual time for each bus but that would really give the game away! Perhaps just show the actual time at the top of the display and continue the give the countdown minutes to next arrivals.
