Pedestrian dies after being hit by train in Upper Hutt

A pedestrian has died after being hit by a train in Upper Hutt this morning.

Police and emergency services were called to Stream Grove in Heretaunga at 9.21am.

The pedestrian died at the scene.

Police are working with Transdev and have asked the public to avoid the area.

The DomPost quotes Metlink spokeswoman Emily Liddell as saying the train driver and four other staff had been stood down and were getting welfare counselling alongside 11 passengers on the Wellington to Upper Hutt service.

MetLink advised that most trains would be replaced by buses because of the accident.

The 8:35am service from Wellington to Upper Hutt was cancelled from Silverstream.
The 9:05am service from Wellington to Upper Hutt was bus replaced between Taita and Upper Hutt. This service was delayed.
The 9:30am service from Upper Hutt to Wellington was bus replaced from Upper Hutt to Taita, and will run as a train from Taita to Wellington. This service departed late from Upper Hutt.

    Perhaps this report could better consider the huge impact to family rather than focusing on commuters and travel disruptions. A suggestion is to add a link to metlink instead.
