Wastewater upgrade: new pipes and pump station under Dixon Street

News from Wellington Water
Wellington Water, on behalf of the Wellington City Council, will begin work on Monday at the corner of Victoria and Dixon Street on an important upgrade of the central city’s wastewater network.

The six-month project will include the construction of a new underground pump station at Volunteer Corner and an upgrade of the pipes beneath Dixon Street that connect to the wastewater mains on Willis Street.

Tonia Haskell, Network Development and Delivery Group Manager, says the project will not only support growth around the Victoria Street area, but also provide additional resilience to the city’s wider wastewater network.

“Wellington City Council has identified this part of the city as a transformational growth area in its Urban Growth Plan. Therefore this upgrade is in line with our priority of ensuring the region’s water network has the capacity to absorb growth, and that we can continue to provide our customers with a consistent, reliable and sustainable service,” says Ms Haskell.

“This upgrade won’t just support the 200 new apartments currently under construction, but will cater for further residential and commercial growth. The new infrastructure will also help to relieve the pressure on the city’s other pump stations, which importantly will reduce the possibility of overflows into the harbour.”

While the project is being delivered with long-term benefit in mind, Ms Haskell says the construction methodology being used is a first-of-its-kind in New Zealand and has been designed to limit impact on neighbours and passing vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

“We will construct the pump station using pre-cast segments, which will mean we can work faster, quieter, safer and in a smaller construction area than we normally could with underground works of this nature.”

The project team of GHD and Brian Perry Civil will also use real time traffic management tracking, to monitor and manage the impact of these works on surrounding streets.

As we carry out this work, we ask that road users and pedestrians please be careful and patient in the vicinity of the worksite.

The project is anticipated to be completed by the end of the year.
