Truck rolls near Pukerua Bay, closing SH1 for 18 hours

News from NZ Police
Motorists travelling into Wellington this morning faced significant delays following a truck crash on State Highway 1.

The truck, which was transporting potentially hazardous chemicals, rolled south of Pukerua Bay blocking the road in both directions about 3.45am. The truck driver sustained minor injuries.

SH1 was closed between Paekakariki and Grays Road at Mana and cars were diverted over the Paekakariki Hill Road.

The road was closed till almost 10pm.

Report from RNZ
Fire and Emergency shift manager Belinda Beets said about 50 firefighters and support crew – including a hazmat unit – are at the scene, 500m north of Plimmerton. She said it was not clear what type of chemicals the truck was carrying. Police said the chemicals were “potentially hazardous”.

Pukurea Bay resident Paul FitzGerald said the large truck and trailer is on its side, stretching across the road.

“The passenger door was sticking vertically in the air, so obviously the driver climbed out that way. There is no sign of anything spilled on the road, but there was slight chemical whiff in the air. Acetone and something else, which I couldn’t recognise.”
