MetService warnrf that wind gusts could damage trees, powerlines and unsecured structures. It says driving may be hazardous, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles.

The Remutaka Hill Road was closed this afternoon because of the high winds. NZTA advised: please delay your journey or use the detour via SH1 to Ohau, SH57 and either the Pahīatua Track or Saddle Road which will add approximately 3 hours to your journey time.

The road reopened at 4.45 when the winds eased.
