A 41-year-old man has been charged with the murder of Francis Tyson who was decapitated in Petone on Friday night.
Mr Tyson, 71, was found dead at a Jackson Street address after emergency services were called at around 9.50pm on 30 November.
Police have confirmed that he was decapitated.
The accused man appeared in the Hutt Valley Hutt District Court this morning. He has also been charged with having possession for sale and supply and intentional damage. He was remanded in custody to reappear in the High Court at Wellington on December 19.
Police yesterday would not speculate on any potential motive for the killing.

A post-mortem is being undertaken today on the body of the 71-year-old man found dead in Petone on Friday night. Police expect to be able to name him tomorrow. The scene examination at the Jackson Street Flats is likely to continue for several more days.
Police are aware of speculation as to the nature of the deceased’s injuries. After speaking to representatives of the family of the deceased today, Police can confirm he was decapitated.
Police will not speculate on any potential motive for the killing. Neither the dead man nor the 41-year-old man who was arrested on Saturday are gang members.
The arrested man will be re-appearing in the Hutt Valley District Court tomorrow.
We want to reassure the community of Petone that this appears to have been an isolated incident, and Police are working hard to find answers for the family of the deceased.

The Police investigation into the death of a 71-year-old man in Petone last night is ongoing.
As a result of inquiries today a 41-year-old man was arrested on unrelated matters and appeared in the Lower Hutt District Court on charges relating to willful damage and drug possession. He was remanded in custody.
Police are still looking to speak with any witnesses to the incident and also anyone who may have information that could assist the inquiries.
People in Petone will notice an increased Police presence in the area over the coming days. Police are committed to understanding what has occurred and holding to account those responsible for the man’s death.
