Fire damages church in Porirua

Firefighters have this morning been battling a church fire in Porirua.

RNZ reports that it took 20 firefighters about three hours to get the blaze under control.

Fire and Emergency received multiple calls that the Titahi Bay Baptist Church was on fire just after midnight.

There were no reports of people inside the church.

The DomPost quotes Fire service communication spokesman Murray Dunbar as saying the cause of the fire was being investigated. “It may well be suspicious, but I can’t see that in the job right now.”

The church is on the corner of Waiuta And Kura Streets and has also serves as a community gathering place.
