Drivers striking – NZ Bus services cancelled till 3 or 4pm

Some Wellington bus services are cancelled today during a drivers’ strike.

The Tramways Union union says that members employed by NZ Bus will strike between 9am and 3pm. The dispute is over terms and conditions of employment.

RNZ reports Tramways Union spokesperson Kevin O’Sullivan as saying there were supposed to be stop work meetings today, but the company wanted them held as three separate meetings, to reduce the impact on services. Instead the drivers decided to strike to attend one meeting. He said members would be discussing their collective agreements.

“There’s a major change to shifts which [has] resulted in a big decrease in hours of work for a lot of people and that’s not a satisfactory situation for us to be in.”

MetLink gives a different time for the strike. It says the following NZ Bus services will be cancelled between 8am and 4pm due to the “unexpected” action:

2, 3, 12, 14, 18, 18e, 20, 21, 22, 28, 30, 31, 33, 34, 35, 36, 81, 83, 84, and 85 between 8am and 4pm.

Metlink advises customers to make alternative travel arrangements. The same advice comes from the Regional Council, which asks Metlink customers to check the Metlink website and commuter app. The council also says, confusingly:

“Although the strike only relates to the routes listed, it could affect other routes as customers look for alternative buses to make their journeys. Metlink has informed essential services, and is in constant contact with all bus operators to keep customers updated through its website and social media channels, as well as through public information on radio and at bus stops.”

Then, more confusion:
