The DomPost reports that the fire started in a building housing the Dervish Superette and spread into a neighbouring Thai restaurant. Fourteen appliances fought the fire. No injuries were reported.

Because of the fire, Kilbirnie Crescent was closed. It will remain closed until possibly midday on Monday due to concerns from the City Council about the stability of the buildings affected by the fire. Because of this, Metlink closed four bus stops:
Stop 7223 Kilbirnie Crescent at Childers Terrace
Stop 7222 Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre (opposite)
Stop 6222 Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre
Stop 6223 Kilbirnie Library – Kilbirnie Crescent

There was also a fire on the Remutaka Hill Road today. The fire started in a car, and spread to bush alongside the highway. The road was closed soon after midday and was closed till mid-afternoon.

When one lane was reopened at 3.15 (with a stop/go arrangement), the NZTA reported serious congestion, and 90 minutes later west-bound traffic was queued back to Featherston. At 6.45, both lanes were reopened and congestion was easing.

There were also afternoon delays for northbound traffic on SH1 between Waikanae and Otaki.
