This was the crowd of 2000 students who gathered in Civic Square this morning before marching through the CBD to Parliament.

Student organisers of the 15 March climate change strikes were back for round two today, with students walking out of school not only in Wellington but also across the country.

The first nationwide school strike for climate action came to a halt on 15 March as news of the Christchurch mosque attacks spread. Organisers of today’s march say they’re ramping up their effort this time in a bid to get the government to act.

RNZ reports that the Wellington students urged MPs to move the goal for net zero carbon emissions from 2050 to 2040. They also called for Parliament to declare a climate emergency. Strike leaders told the rally the world is in an emergency and political leaders need to act.

RNZ education correspondent John Gerritsen said secondary school students told him that their schools and families were supportive of them being at the strike because they agreed it was such an important issue.
