News from NZIFF
Three more central Wellington venues have been confirmed for the New Zealand International Film Festival (NZIFF) this year. Agreements with the three venues – Light House Cuba, City Gallery Wellington and Te Papa’s Soundings Theatre – were made following the closure of Reading Cinemas Courtenay earlier in the year.
The venues join the line-up of other cinemas hosting NZIFF in Wellington. The Embassy continues to be the main festival venue, with screenings also at the Penthouse in Brooklyn, the Roxy in Miramar, and the Light House Petone.
In addition to the extra central city venues, NZIFF will also present selected films at Reading Cinemas Porirua, a festival first for 2019. The Porirua screenings will be presented as a part of the Wellington programme from 26 July – 11 August.
“With the closure of Reading Courtenay, we are delighted that the Light House Cuba, City Gallery and Soundings Theatre, Te Papa have welcomed us. We are also excited to extend NZIFF’s offering and expand our audience reach by presenting screenings at Reading Cinemas Porirua for the first time,” says General Manager Sharon Byrne.
Also new this year, NZIFF has partnered with Visa Wellington on a Plate (VWOAP) for a special event screening of The Biggest Little Farm, a documentary from Emmy Award-winning filmmaker John Chester. The special event will be hosted by the Coco at the Roxy team who will serve a vegetarian garden plate and a non-alcoholic beverage to guests prior to the film screening. The event is to be held at The Roxy Cinema on Monday 5th August, 8:00pm-10:15pm.
The Biggest Little Farm follows director John and wife Molly from their Los Angeles apartment to Ventura County where they hope to create a bio-diverse farm. Faced with infertile land, fruit-eating creatures and persistent coyotes they battle nature in their heart-warming and inspiring pursuit of a sustainable future.
The NZIFF 2019 programme for Wellington launches on Thursday 27th June, with tickets on sale from July 4th. Tickets for The Biggest Little Farm event will be on sale June 28th. The festival opens on July 26.
