Students coming to Wellington for vegetable-based cooking contest

This year’s National Final of the Rabobank Root to Tip competition will be held at Weltec in Wellington on Friday 23rd August.

The competition is run by the Garden to Table, and supported by rural finance and agribusiness specialist Rabobank.

Years 5 and 6 students are challenged to create and present a two-course vegetable-based ‘root to tip’ meal in teams of two, using seasonal, locally-sourced ingredients, using as much of the product as possible, with little or no wastage.

Over 500 children from Northland to Otago took part in the regional heats, and twelve teams will travel to Wellington to take part in the national finals. Winners will be chosen based on the way students use local produce they have sourced from school, home and community gardens, the standard and presentation of their dishes, and how much food waste is created at the end.
