Nanogirl returns to the Opera House

News from NanoGirl
Colourful explosions, lasers, interactive experiments and musical drainpipes are just some of the spectacles awaiting audiences at an all-new explosive live science show at The Opera House in Wellington this month.

Presented by Vodafone New Zealand and Nanogirl Labs, the 2019 Nanogirl Live! Bring on the Noise show is currently touring nationwide, and is already even bigger than their three previous sell-out tours.

First brought to life in 2016, Nanogirl Live! stars nanotechnologist and world-renowned science educator Dr Michelle Dickinson as Nanogirl. This year’s all-new show sees Nanogirl, together with her trusty lab assistant Boris, and CLAIR (the team’s Constantly Learning Artificial Intelligence Repository), taking audiences on an exciting adventure exploring the science of sound through experiments, explosions, music and plenty of laughs.

“We believe that understanding science and engineering is important for everyone,” says Nanogirl Labs co-founder Dr Michelle Dickinson. “We’ve been really humbled by the huge support we’ve received from our Wellington fans, and we’re excited to be coming back to The Opera House next month after a fantastic show there last year. I’m really looking forward to meeting our Wellington audiences and being able to share science with everyone there!”

The world’s only female-led live science show hit a major hurdle when thieves stole tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of equipment in September. Miraculously, once word got out of the theft, some of the equipment was returned, putting the Nanogirl Live! tour back on track.

Overcoming the challenge of the stolen equipment has reinforced the Nanogirl Labs team’s determination to make science, technology and engineering fun and accessible for all children, some of whom will get to hop up on stage to help with an experiment in this fully interactive experience.

“We created Nanogirl Live! to help inspire and engage our young audiences to find out more about science and engineering in a way that’s both educational and entertaining. The explosions and experiments in our show make it a must-see for the whole family, and demonstrate that science is all around us, every day” says Nanogirl Labs co-founder and CEO Joe Davis.

Thanks to the support of the show’s sponsors, Vodafone New Zealand, the MacDiarmid Institute for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology, the University of Auckland’s Faculty of Engineering, Engineering New Zealand and Toyota the tour is now bigger and better than ever.

“Without our sponsors, the show couldn’t go ahead; they are the reason we can take this show to kids all over New Zealand,” says Davis. “Getting the cast, crew and equipment to and from each of the venues is no small task. Making the show available to families of all backgrounds and circumstances is something that wouldn’t happen without their support.”

Nanogirl Live! Bring on the Noise will be performed at 3pm and 5pm on Saturday 16th November at The Opera House in Wellington.
