Covid-19 is a blessing in disguise on the subject of air pollution and the impending global catastrophe of runaway climate change. Since the end of World War 2, motor vehicle production and the use of natural resources needed to build them, transport them to world markets, then use them on roads built to accommodate them, has run far out of control. The Regional COuncil’s air-quality monitoring stations have recorded the dramatic drop in air pollution. We people out exercising on streets almost devoid of cars relish the peace and reduced risk to life and limb. Those who walk at night love the way the city’s lights sparkle as never before. LGWM’s roading dreams must end now.
The Regional Council has a big responsibility for our air pollution. Getting rid of the diesel buses (especially the old ones imported from Auckland) and replacing them with more electric buses would help deliver this peaceful, pollution-free Wellington we are experiencing right now. [via twitter]
The low death rates of New Zealand and Australia from the Covid virus could possibly be helped by low levels of air pollution compared to the northern hemisphere, and Vitamin D levels which are high due to us coming out of the sunny season, while these will be low in the northern hemisphere due to them coming out of the cold and dark winter. I suggest everyone needs to be taking Vitamin D supplements, especially those with darker skin which needs more sun to make an equivalent amount of this essential vitamin.
Please will a Regional Councillor comment on Benoit Pette’s suggestion. And don’t say that you have given the bus companies a free rein about this.
@Chris Horne: the word “blessing” is inappropriate. As well as taking a terrible toll of human life, the pandemic will see many people lose their livelihoods and we face the real prospect of a depression. Only a member of a cult like Extinction Rebellion would see anything positive in it.
I couldn’t find any mainstream health websites which recommend using vitamin D as a guard against the virus. I did find some information warning that overdosing can be harmful. For that reason I suggest it may be wise to remove or give a reference for the comment above advocating using vitamin D supplementation, or at least advising getting medical advice first.
Without the Euro3, 4, 5 and 6 diesel buses, the graph for air quality in Wellington would look so much better.
