It’s the start of a long weekend, so there were the usual delays on SH1 north of Wellington today.
The delays started before midday. The NZ Transport Agency reported at 1.50:
Major northbound delays are continuing across SH1:
• Plimmerton to Pukerua Bay: A long queue
• Paekākāriki Hill Rd: closed until 7pm
• Long queues from Waikanae Beach to Peka Peka
• Long queues and slow traffic from Te Horo to Otaki
NZTA said it expected congestion to continue till 8pm between Porirua and Otaki.
However at 4.30 it said that congestion on SH1 had improved around Pukerua Bay, but remained heavy from Peka Peka:
• Pukerua Bay – queue at Airlie Rd
• Peka Peka – queue back towards Waikanae Beach
• Te Horo to Ōtaki – slow
NZ like a 3rd world country when trying to leave Wellington on a long weekend! A trip that normally takes 2 hours took 4! Not helped by motorists sneaking around back roads on Kapiti coast and then rejoining main road #invest #infrastructure #shovelready pic.twitter.com/0mFp5Kex9s

At 6pm, the NZTA said congestion had eased, but traffic remained slow moving through Te Horo and Otaki.
There was another cause of SH1 congestion during the afternoon:
Due to a gravel spill, the left lane at the Plimmerton Roundabout was blocked, with queues back to the Paremata Roundabout.
