Wellington director Taika Waititi’s new feature Boy is close to setting an extraordinary record – it is about to become the highest-grossing New Zealand feature film ever released in New Zealand.
its gross box office now totals more than $7,037,000, which means that within the next few days it will have exceeded the previous record of $7,047,000 held by Roger Donaldson’s 2005 feature The World’s Fastest Indian.
Boy’s New Zealand box office figures have already exceeded those of the previous record-holders – Once Were Warriors with $6.7million and Whale Rider with $6.4million.
Boy has been first or second in the New Zealand top ten list since its theatrical release began in March, attracting bigger audiences than the highest-profile Hollywood productions. Last week it was second only to the newly released Robin Hood starring New Zealander Russell Crowe.
