Airport decides to support the All Blacks by building a sign on the Miramar Peninsula

Wellington Airport is installing a 737 sized ALL BLACKS sign on the Miramar Peninsula as a sign of its support for the team during the Rugby World Cup.
“There will be more international visitors passing through Wellington than ever before over the coming weeks and this is an unmissable opportunity to let them know just how excited we are about the tournament and how supportive we are of the All Blacks,” said Matt Clarke, Wellington Airport Chief Commercial Officer.
New Zealand Rugby Union CEO Steve Tew said the installation of a dominant sign on the Miramar Peninsula was an innovative way of showing the region’s support for the All Blacks.
“The level of support the All Blacks are receiving around the country in advance of Rugby World Cup 2011 is fantastic. The sight of a giant All Blacks sign as people fly into Wellington is a really generous and unique way of demonstrating commitment to the team. We were humbled by the concept when the Airport first approached us with the idea and more than happy to give it our support.“
The ‘Wellywood or What?’ competition will decide what will follow the temporary ALL BLACKS sign. The competition launched today by the ‘Wellywood or What?’ Panel will give the Wellington region the opportunity to submit ideas and vote for the permanent installation on the Miramar Peninsula.
On the first calm evening from Wednesday the ALL BLACKS sign will be installed. As soon as the ‘Wellywood or What?’ ideas have been voted on by the public, the ALL BLACKS sign will be changed for the most popular idea. To find out about the ‘Wellywood or What?’ competition visit www.dompost.co.nz

A truly weird idea. Of all the ways that an airport could support a rugby team, this must be the strangest.
Actually WIA, there are a hell of a lot of people who care nothing for the All Blacks, and even less for your ugly sign and lack of creative thinking, not to mention tact. Did the overwhelming opposition to the sign not teach you anything? Many Wellingtonians actually like the nickname “Wellywood.” They just didn’t want a giant oaf of a sign ruining a beautiful piece of the city’s landscape. Take the hint.
Wow – fantastic. I’m not a rugby fan at all (never watched a full game) but love this idea. No doubt it’ll be part of all travellers’ photographs they take home with them after their time in NZ. I hope it helps to lift NZ’s reputation around the world. Well done airport.
