Wellington City Councillors met yesterday morning to discuss the employment of the council’s chief executive Garry Poole.
In a large advertisement last week, the meeting of the performance review committee was described as “extraordinary.”
Yesterday morning’s meeting was not open to the public. It was followed in the afternoon by a meeting of the council’s strategy and policy committee, which was also held behind closed doors. All councillors are members of this committee.
The DomPost reports that a recommendation from the performance review committee was taken from the morning meeting to the afternoon meeting.
It quotes deputy mayor Ian McKinnon as saying at the end of the day: “There’s a process to go through and we need to do the right thing by the people involved.”
But how does the process impact on the employment of the chief executive? And what is the right thing? The council isn’t yet telling us.
