Doctor tells health board it showed “lack of good faith” on funding cut

News from United Community Action Newtown
UCAN is holding another protest to coincide with Capital and Coast District Health Board’s board meeting this Friday. Dr Ben Gray will make a submission criticising the board for a lack of good faith in responding to a previous submission he made addressing the 7.8% funding cut to Newtown Union Health Service.

The board had a report prepared that presumably was the basis of their decision to reject requests to reinstate funding. The report was kept secret and the discussions were held in public excluded session. That report has subsequently been shown to have nothing in it that could not have been made public as it has been released as a result of a request under the Official Information Act.

The report is seriously deficient. There is no input from any clinicians as to the effects of these cuts. There are errors of fact, misleading quoting of statistics and a complete failure to address Dr Gray’s main argument that these costs would cause harm to the most disadvantaged patients and cost the DHB more as a result of extra costs to the hospital.

UCAN is calling on people to hold a minute’s silence at 9.00am on Friday in remembrance of our dying health system, and will be handing out apples “to keep the doctor away” This is being supported by:
