Sausage sizzle, face-painting and fancy dress to reopen Tawa Pool

Press Release – Wellington City Council
Dust off your flares and get along to Tawa Pool for a free ‘70s pool party this Saturday. Tawa Pool has been closed since October last year for a major overhaul and earthquake-strengthening, and is now being officially reopened to the public.

At 1.30pm on Saturday Mayor Celia Wade-Brown will open the pool, and the afternoon fun goes through until 5pm. There’ll be prizes for best ‘70s outfit, a sausage sizzle, face painting, games and competitions.

Local artist Xoe Hall and six helpers will be painting a 19m mural near the pool and skatepark.

The Council’s Recreation Manager, Julian Todd, says “a huge thank you” to Tawa Pool customers for their patience.

“The strengthening work was more involved and took longer than we anticipated, but it’s worth the wait. As well as upgrading the pool facilities, we have future-proofed the building against tougher engineering standards, giving the community a safer and better place to swim.”

The entire project has included a new roof with extra beams, steel beams to strengthen the rest of the building, an acoustic ceiling, vapour barrier, resurfaced floors, new window bays and improved access to the mezzanine floor.
