73-year-old rider killed when motorcycle catches fire after collision near Rai Valley

A motorcyclist from England died in a collision with a truck on SH6 between Nelson and Rai Valley yesterday afternoon. The motorcycle was with a small group of riders heading north towards Rai Valley when the collision occurred on the Rai Valley side of Serpentine Straight.

The collision happened on a bend shortly after 2pm.

The motorcycle caught fire on impact and police believe the motorcyclist was killed instantly. He was Allan Ford, aged 73 years, from Horsham, West Sussex in the UK. Mr Ford had been holidaying in New Zealand for several weeks. He was riding with four other motorcyclists when the accident happened.

The driver of the truck, which was carrying LPG cylinders, was shaken but unharmed. The LPG cylinders were not involved in the fire.

Police have spoken to witnesses but would still like to hear from anyone who witnessed the accident.

A serious crash investigation is under way.
