Nine Academy Award nominations in three categories for The Hobbit

The extraordinary achievements of Peter Jackson’s creative team at Miramar have been recognised this morning with Academy Award nominations in three categories for nine of the people who worked on The Hobbit: an Unexpected Journey.

One of the three categories is for the film’s production design. The nomination names production designer Dan Hennah, who won an Oscar for his art direction of The Lord of the Rings: the Return of the King. He has had three earlier nominations for art direction. The other two nominees are Ra Vincent (his first nomination) and Simon Bright (he was previously nominated for King Kong) for set decoration.

Another category is for the film’s visual effects. Four-time Oscar-winner Joe Letteri, who is Director of Weta Digital, is again nominated, with his colleagues Eric Saindon and David Clayton (their first nominations) and R Christopher White (his second nomination).

The third category is for makeup and hairstyling (all those beards …) with Peter Swords King, Rick Findlater and Tami Lane on the list of nominees.

The Hobbit is the only VFX Oscar nomination with all VFX created by a single studio (Weta Digital). The other four were worked on by multiple studios.
