As for the main 7.9 event which was devastating by itself, a 7.3 quake jolted the region again 3 years later in 1934. The 1987 Edgecumbe and 2011 Christchurch earthquake both had magnitudes of ’6.3′, just goes to show that it’s not always the greatest magnitudes!
