Woman charged with murder after man stabbed to death in Hutt Valley flat

Just after 6.00pm tonight Hutt Valley Police charged a 29-year-old woman with the murder of Sean Verma, who was stabbed to death last night in a flat in Lower Hutt.

Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Thornton says “As a result of information provided by the public, we have been able to charge a 29-year-old woman – who was being interviewed by Police – with murder.

“The investigation team is continuing to piece the events of last night together and we would urge any witnesses to speak with Police.

“At this stage, we are not seeking anyone else in relation to his death”, says Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Thornton.

The 29-year-old woman will appear in the Lower Hutt District Court tomorrow.

A scene examination is continuing at the residential East Street address.

Police are appealing for anyone with any information to contact Hutt Valley Police on (04) 560 2600. Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously through Crimestoppers by phoning 0800 555 111.

Hutt Valley Police launched a homicide investigation after a 30-year-old man died from a stab wound to his chest overnight. Police were called to the East Street address around 10.30pm last night. Ambulance and Police staff attempted to resuscitate the man but he died at the scene.

Police secured the East Street block of flats and a scene examination occurred today.

A 29-year-old woman was arrested and will be interviewed by Police today.

“At this early stage of the inquiry, we don’t believe that local residents should be worried about their safety. I would encourage them to come forward and tell us about the events of last night”, says Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Thornton.

Police are appealing for any witnesses who were in the area last night to contact Hutt Valley Police on (04) 560 2600.

A post-mortem examination is to be conducted today.
