German motorcycle tourist swerves and dies in crash near Whanganui
News from NZ Police
A man died in hospital last night after a motorcycle crash on State Highway 4, near Whanganui. He was 52-year-old Hans Jurgen Zech of Germany. He was holidaying with his wife and friends in New Zealand.
They were touring New Zealand on motorcycles as a group.
At about 1.30pm yesterday the group were travelling north on State Highway 4, in a section of road known as the Para Paras.
The group of motorcycles had just passed though a section of road works that is controlled by traffic lights, forcing all traffic into the sound bound lane. At the end of the road works the group moved back to the left with the exception of Mr Zech. To avoid an oncoming south-bound vehicle Mr Zech swerved, however this resulted in him crashing.
Ambulance attended the scene and transported Mr Zech to Whanganui hospital where he died late yesterday evening.
Police are continuing their investigation and the matter will be referred to the coroner in due course.
