15-year-old passenger killed, 17-year-old driver injured when car collides with train

A 15-year-old passenger was killed yesterday morning when a vehicle collided with a train in the Wairarapa. She was Grace Ellen Diedrichs from Carterton.
The 17-year-old male driver remains in a serious condition with head injuries in Masterton Hospital.
Their vehicle collided with the south-bound commuter train as it was passing the crossing at Wiltons Road at around 8.10am this morning.
The Serious Crash Unit investigation into the crash is likely to take several days.

A woman was killed when a vehicle was hit by a commuter train near Carterton this morning. The south-bound commuter train was passing the crossing at Wiltons Road, at 8.15am.
A woman passenger in the vehicle died at the scene and the male driver was taken to Wairarapa Hospital in a serious condition.
Road blocks were in place from both ends of Wilton Road. The crossing was controlled by a stop sign.
The Serious Crash Unit will be undertaking a scene examination
There was extensive damage to the vehicle from the impact of the train.
There were only a few passengers on the train and a bus was arranged to take them to Wellington.
The driver of the train is shaken but not injured and is being supported by Police and Victim Support, along with Kiwi-Rail staff.
Police are asking anyone who may have seen or heard anything in the vicinity of the crash to contact Wairarapa Police on 06 370 0300.
