Unhelpful council advice: avoid Newtown because of traffic delays

Wellington.Scoop
There have been serious traffic delays in Newtown today. South-bound traffic on Adelaide Road was cut back to one lane this morning, and there was a jam from Riddiford Street back to the Basin. This evening Constable Street was also down to one lane. Any awareness of the need for efficient traffic controls seemed to be absent.

Press Release – Wellington City Council
There are extensive traffic delays in Newtown this evening due to two incidents. Traffic is down to one lane on Constable Street as Wellington Electricity contractors fix a power pole that has fallen at the corner of Constable and Daniell streets.

As well as that, a trolley bus wire has broken at the intersection of Adelaide Road, John and Riddiford streets. A repair truck is blocking one lane and is causing disruption especially to northbound traffic.

Motorists are advised to avoid Newtown for the next hour or so if at all possible.
