Press Release – Classic Hits
Classic Hits radio announcer and Christchurch celebrity, Jason Gunn and his on-air partner Dave Fitzgerald have successfully navigated the Cook Strait in bumper boats to raise awareness of boating safety and raise money for Coastguard. The two bumper boats, sponsored by Te Akau Racing – New Zealand and Singapore and Wisker Decorating Limited, were especially purchased from the United States of America.
The weather was too rough for the pursuit yesterday, and today in the roughest part of the strait for safety reasons they sought the comfort of the support boat for a short time. They arrived safely in Seatoun at 5.47pm, under the 12 hours they had estimated it would take.
“I won’t say it was the easiest thing I’ve ever done,” says Gunn. “Conditions were cramped and we did have to contend with seaweed and very large swells but I must say it’s very cool to think we’ve done it.”
Fitzgerald says seeing dolphins was a real highlight as was the Interislander ferries making them feel very welcome on their patch.
“They obviously listen to Classic Hits and knew what we were doing, lots of people were out on deck waving to us and they sounded their fog horn numerous times which was pretty special. I did however feel quite small in my little bumper boat compared to the ship.”
The pair was accompanied by Coastguard out of the Sounds and a support boat to ensure the trip went as smoothly as possible.
“Coastguard was fantastic, we’re lucky to have this resource in New Zealand and they totally deserve the $8,100 we raised for them.”
