More job cuts at council – street cleaning to be privatised

The Wellington City Council voted yesterday to contract out street cleaning and weeding work, with a loss of about twenty jobs.

Radio New Zealand reports that the decision was made on the casting vote of Mayor Celia Wade-Brown.

The DomPost reports that in recent years CitiOps jobs have been cut from 200 to about 40. It says councillors today voted to stop any further outsourcing.

But it was too late for the street cleaners.

Just a couple of weeks ago, our Mayor, along with several other Councillors were saying how important it was to keep CitiOps. Today, she flip-flops. The other person who flip-flopped was Councillor Justin Lester. Privatising/outsourcing is the name of the game. Where is the accountability – time to get some back-bone on this Council.

Last week’s Mt Victoria Newsletter carried news of the contracting out. http://www.mtvicnews.org.nz Apparently the Mt Vic Residents Association heard about it from the drivers during their inorganic rubbish collection in December – they fear it will be the last such collection. The question is, why didn’t the councillors know it was coming?

It was refreshing to hear the new Town Clerk’s voice on the radio this morning – I never heard what’s-his-name ever own anything on behalf of his city administration. Perhaps that’s a clue. And the promise of a better functioning council.
