Press Release – Beervana
Two special brewing competitions were judged today at Beervana, as part of a two day celebration of craft beer in the Capital (Fri 9 and Sat 10 August).
The first was the Media Brew competition, where eight media and brewers partnered to create collaborative brews to be tasted and judged at Beervana. A requirement of the media brew was that it had to include a unique New Zealand ingredient.
The winning media brew was 66 Jet Planes, an India ‘Plane Ale’ by Sarah Harvey, Sunday Star Times, in collaboration with Luke Nicholas from Epic Brewery, made with jet planes and 25% Steinlager Class. In equal second place was Just Desserts, a New Zealand Dessert Ale by Shane Cowlishaw and Michael Forbes, Dominion Post, with Mike Nielson from new brewery Panhead. The other second place award went to Jaffa Stout, a chocolate orange stout by Don Kavanagh, Hospitality/ NZ Herald and Hamish Ward from Deep Creek Brewing.
The second competition judged at Beervana today was the Black Rock Home Brew Competition, with a record 146 entries. The winners were:
1st: Brendan Bransgrove Beer Style: Saison
2nd: Michael Blair Beer Style: Simcoe Stout
3rd: Matt Barnett Beer Style: Strong Belgian Ale
Head Beer Judge Kirsten Taylor said that the top seven or eight entries were easily of commercial quality, being well balanced, interesting and faultless.
