As the homicide inquiry continues into the killing of a man in Jackson Street, Petone, a 43-year-old man appeared in the Hutt Valley District Court this morning and was remanded in custody on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and burglary.
The family of the dead man have been advised and Police can now release the name of the victim. He was 25-year-old Alonsio Iafeta Matalasi, known as Sio, who lived at the Jackson Street flats in Petone.
His family have asked police to reiterate that Mr Matalasi did not have any gang affiliations.
Police are continuing a scene examination at the Jackson Street flats, the Newlands address and of a vehicle located there. This is expected to take several more days.
Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Thornton says “I continue to reassure the community that they should feel just as safe as they did before this incident occurred. The two men connected with this incident have been arrested by Police and put before the Courts. Police are not seeking anyone else.”

Hutt Valley Police have launched a homicide investigation after gun shots were heard in Petone at 10.30pm last night and the body of a 25-year-old man was found at the Jackson Street flats. Police and ambulance staff attempted to resuscitate the man but their attempts were unsuccessful.
A 18-year-old man is in custody and has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and burglary.
A 43-year-old man is also in custody after he called for the assistance of ambulance and he is in hospital with serious knife wounds. Once he is cleared by medical staff he will be interviewed by Police.
Police are conducting a scene examination at the Jackson Street property this morning and will be bringing specialist ESR forensic equipment from Auckland today to map the scene.
Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Thornton says “Police would like to speak to anyone who saw or heard anything in the Jackson Street area around 10.30pm last night.
“We are also interested in hearing from anyone that saw a red 1994 Nissan Lucino, registration GKU810, which has travelled from the Hutt Valley to Newlands. Police have recovered the vehicle and one of the tires is down to the rim so it is likely people would have seen it sparking on the road”.

Hutt Valley police are investigating the death of a 25 year old man in Petone. Police were called to reports of a fight and gunshots in Jackson Street around 10.40pm last night. The man was found a short distance away. Despite CPR at the scene, he died.
Hutt Valley Police Investigations Manager Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Thornton says: “We are in the early stage of our investigation and it is progressing well.
“Today we will focus on a scene examination and we will continue to speak with witnesses.”
The name of the dead man will not be released until police have spoken with his family.
