A 24-year-old man has been charged with murder following the finding of a body at Otaki Beach on Thursday. The man was arrested late last night in Hamilton. He appeared in the Hamilton District Court today.
The dead man has been named as Edward Tahakura, aged 30, from Huntly.
The officer in charge of the investigation, Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Sheridan, said: “A post mortem has been completed and officers are working with the Coroner in order to have Edward’s body returned to his family.”
“The Police investigation will be on-going as we speak to Edward’s family and friends, and the man charged with his murder. We will be establishing why Edward and the man were at Otaki Beach. Outside of this I cannot discuss any aspects of our homicide investigation any further.”
The scene examination at the beach is now completed.
“I want to thank the Otaki community and local media for their assistance in our area inquiries,” said Mr Sheridan.

Police are continuing to examine the scene at Otaki Beach where a man’s body was found yesterday morning. The man’s body was removed from the beach late last night and a post mortem will take place this morning. A vehicle parked in the beach car park that Police believe is associated to the man has also been seized.
Police believe the man was in his late 20s or early 30s.
Officer in charge of the investigation, Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Sheridan said: “The scene examination is likely to be completed by this evening as well as an examination of the vehicle we have seized.”
Approximately 16 officers are working on the investigation and area inquiries are ongoing.
“Once the post mortem is completed we will have a clearer picture of how the man has died and which path our investigation will take,” said Mr Sheridan.

Police this morning launched an investigation after a man’s body was found on Otaki Beach. The man’s body was found at about 8am by a member of the public who contacted Police and emergency services.
A section of the beach has been cordoned off while police conduct a scene examination.
Police are continuing to investigate the unexplained death of a man found on Otaki Beach around 8am this morning. A section of the beach is still cordoned off and Police with forensic specialists are conducting a scene examination which is expected to run into this evening.
Central District Criminal Investigations Manager, Detective Inspector Chris Bensemann said: “We are treating the death as unexplained at this stage and we intend to remove the man’s body from the beach by the end of the day and formally identify him. Once this is done and we have informed his next of kin, a post-mortem will take place.”
“Officers are making area inquiries and speaking to people that were walking on the beach this morning. We are in the early days of our investigation. There is still a lot of information we don’t have and we are working to ascertain what has happened to the man,” said Mr Bensemann.
