A thunder and lightning storm hit Wellington for an hour early this evening, with torrents of rain. Some city streets were flooded. The photo (above) of John Street in Newtown was taken by Paul Eagle.
These two street geysers were photographed by Brendan O’Carroll, outside Arizona.
More than 700 lightning strikes were reported.
From the NZ Transport Agency, there were warnings about surface water on the Hutt Rd, particularly near the Khandallah turn off. Also:
We’re advising people not to use the left lane on SH1 northbound after the Aotea on-ramp, as there is surface flooding.
And from Wellington Airport, a cryptic message at 7.20pm:
Weather related disruption at the airport this evening.
This meant that some flights had been diverted to other airports, or delayed.
