Masked man with knife robs dairy in Whitby; police seek witnesses

Porirua Police are appealing for witnesses after a Whitby dairy was robbed by a man with a knife.

The robbery took place at about 7.55pm last night at the Lakeside Centre Diary in DIscovery Drive, Whitby. As the store owner was preparing to close for the evening, a man entered the dairy armed with a knife and demanded tobacco and money. He stole several tobacco pouches and ran from the dairy.

He is believed to have run towards the lower Whitby lake area.

The store owner was shaken, but was not injured.

The man is described as being approximately 175cm tall, thin to medium build and approximately 20 years of age. He wore a black coloured bandanna which covered his face.

Detective Sergeant Mike Priston says, “We are appealing for anyone who has information in respect to the aggravated robbery that occurred last night to contact Porirua Police. Several people would have been in the area before and after this incident occurred and they would have possibly seen the offender. If anyone has any information about the aggravated robbery I would encourage them to come forward.”
