A triumph for Michael Houstoun

It was a triumph for Michael Houstoun in the Michael Fowler Centre last night. He was given a standing ovation, and a spectacular shower of rocketing confetti, at the end of the fortieth concert in his marathon Beethoven reCycle series.

Prolonged applause from an audience of more than 600 people made him return to the stage four times.

A presentation of red roses from Chamber Music New Zealand, who had organised the concert series, which began in Wellington in April and ended last night, again in Wellington. During the series, Michael Houstoun played all 32 of Beethoven’s piano sonatas in forty concerts in ten centres.

In this morning’s DomPost, John Button described Houstoun’s playing as “sublime and superb” and said the 40-concert series was “momentous” and “extraordinary.” Everybody in the MFC would agree.
