The South African flag has been flown at half mast from the Wellington Town Hall today, to mark the death of Nelson Mandela.

Mayor Celia Wade-Brown has spoken with The South African High Commissioner Zodwa Lallie and offered condolences to her and the staff of the High Commission.

“Nelson Mandela is a shining light in the global peace community for leading the end of apartheid in South Africa,” said the Mayor.

“His sacrifice of 26 years in prison and his willingness to lead reconciliation with his imprisoners remains truly inspirational.”

The Wellington City Council will support the South African High Commission for preparations to honour the global leader in the Capital.
