Horses racing, or men and women flying through the air. Two of the choices for Wellington Anniversary Day today.
Racing at Trentham begins at 12.46, with eight events continuing till 4.52.
And on Taranaki Wharf, the annual Birdman Wellington event starts at 11am and finishes at 5pm, offering the Birdman flying contest as well as entertainment and stalls.
Spread your wings and explore your creativity, advise the organisers. You could land yourself a fantastic prize and be crowned Birdman Wellington Champion 2014. Entries are open to individuals and teams, and judges are looking for fantastic costumes, dazzling showmanship and a big splash. Design a crazy flying costume and launch yourself off the specially-made “airstrip” on Taranaki Wharf.
Kids have a chance to shine, jumping from a floating platform for the “BirdKidz” junior Birdman Wellington contest at 11am.
You also have the opportunity to use your Birdman antics to raise funds for Forest & Bird and other environment groups. There are great prizes.
And bikes! Come and try bike polo. The kids can ride around the wheels adventure area, and bring down your vintage, interesting, or stylish bikes to display for everyone to enjoy and talk about. Bikes are available to ride for the bike polo, and there will be a tournament for all comers from 3pm. The bikes area is Odlins Plaza.
There will be a range of activities to provide an entertaining day for all ages, including two music stages one on Frank Kitts Park, the other in front of Te Papa.
